Competition Levels
Archery competitions are run at different levels, from relaxed club level shoots through to national and international events. Understanding how these levels work makes it easier to know where you fit, and what to aim for next. You can start where you’re comfortable and progress at your own pace.
Club Competitions –Target
Most people begin at club level and for good reason.
Club competitions are relaxed, welcoming, and designed to help you build confidence. You’ll shoot alongside other members, learn how scoring works, and get used to the rhythm of a competition day without any pressure.
It’s the foundation of competitive archery. For many archers, this is where the enjoyment really starts, regular shoots, familiar faces, and steady improvement.
QRE – Qualifying & Ranking Events
QREs are your first step into more formal competition.
These events follow recognised standards and allow scores to be used for rankings and qualification purposes. While still accessible, they introduce a more structured competition environment.
If you’re starting to take your shooting more seriously, this is where you’ll likely head next.
Grand Prix Series
Grand Prix events sit a step above standard competitions.
They attract committed archers looking to test themselves more consistently and build ranking points across a series of events. There’s a stronger focus on performance, but the environment is still supportive and community-driven.
State Competitions
State-level events bring together archers from across Victoria.
These competitions are more competitive and structured, often forming part of selection pathways or rankings. You’ll be shooting alongside some of the state’s best archers, making it a great benchmark for your progress.
National Competitions
At national level, you’re competing against archers from across Australia.
These events follow strict formats and standards, and often play a role in national rankings and team selection. The level of competition is significantly higher, but the pathway to get there is clear.
International Competitions
This is the highest level of the sport.
International events include world competitions and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where athletes represent Australia on the global stage. Reaching this level requires long-term commitment and high-performance training.
Youth Competitions
Youth competitions are designed specifically for younger archers.
They provide age-appropriate pathways to learn, compete, and develop skills in a supportive environment. Many archers begin their competitive journey here and progress through the levels over time.
Para Archery
Para archery ensures the sport is accessible to archers with a disability.
Competitions are structured to provide fair and inclusive participation, with opportunities ranging from club level through to international competition, including the Paralympic Games.
Start where you’re comfortable
You don’t need to aim for elite competition to enjoy archery.
Most archers take part at club or local level, enjoying the challenge, improving their skills, and being part of the community. If you want to progress further, the pathway is there when you’re ready.
