Performance Squads
Performance squads support archers who are working toward higher levels of competition. They provide structured training environments, coaching support, and development opportunities for athletes who are looking to progress beyond regular competition.
What is a Performance Squad?
A performance squad is a group of selected archers who are identified as having the potential to develop further in the sport.
These squads focus on improving technique, consistency, and competition readiness through more structured training and guidance. For many archers, this is the next step beyond regular competition.
State development programs
At a state level, development programs are designed to support emerging archers.
These programs may include squad training sessions, coaching support, and opportunities to build the skills needed for higher-level competition. The focus is on long-term development, helping archers progress at a steady and sustainable pace.
Opportunities and program structures may vary from year to year, depending on coaching resources and participation.
High performance & National Squads
At the national level, Archery Australia manages high performance and national squad programs.
These squads support archers who are competing at the highest levels, including those working toward international representation. Selection is based on performance, results, and long-term potential.
How selection works
Selection into performance squads is typically based on demonstrated ability and potential.
This may include competition results, scoring benchmarks, consistency, and coach recommendations. Unlike one-off team selection, squads are often focused on development over time rather than a single performance.
Your pathway into a Squad
For most archers, the pathway into a performance squad looks like this:
- Compete regularly and build experience
- Improve consistency and scoring
- Participate in recognised competitions (such as QREs and State events)
- Stay engaged with coaches and development opportunities
Progression happens over time, there’s no single moment that defines it.
A step toward higher levels
Performance squads are not required to enjoy archery, but they are there for those who want to take the next step. They sit between general competition and elite representation, helping bridge the gap for archers who are ready to develop further.
