Types of Archery
There’s more than one way to enjoy archery! Across Victoria, you’ll see a few different shooting styles – each with its own challenges and rewards.
Target Archery
Target Archery is the foundation of the sport and the primary discipline practised by all Archery Victoria clubs. It’s the style you’ll see at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where archers shoot a set number of arrows at round, coloured targets placed at fixed distances.
Target Archery is ideal for learning proper technique, building confidence, and improving accuracy over time. It’s also the most accessible form for beginners, with ranges and coaching available across Victoria.
Indoor Archery
Target Archery is the foundation of the sport and the primary discipline practised by all Archery Victoria clubs. It’s the style you’ll see at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where archers shoot a set number of arrows at round, coloured targets placed at fixed distances.
Field Archery
Field Archery combines the skill of target shooting with the adventure of being outdoors, think of it as bushwalking meets archery. Archers move through a marked course set in natural terrain, shooting at targets placed at different distances, angles, and elevations.
It’s great fun, highly social, and builds practical shooting skills in a more varied environment. A number of Victorian clubs offer Field Archery in addition to their main Target Archery programs.
Clout Archery
Clout Archery is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of the sport. Archers shoot arrows high into the air toward a flag (called the “clout”) on the ground, scoring points for how close their arrows land within marked rings. It’s a unique challenge that tests your ability to read distance and wind, and while not every club has the space to host it, many archers enjoy giving it a try at special events.
