Archery Equipment
Types of Bows
Each style of archery uses slightly different equipment. There are three main types of bows you’ll encounter.
If you’re new to archery, you won’t need to buy your own bow straight away. Clubs provide all the equipment you’ll need for Come & Try sessions and beginner courses.
Recurve Bow
The Olympic bow, with limbs that curve gracefully away from the archer. It’s simple, elegant, and a great place to start.
Compound Bow
Uses cams and cables to make drawing easier and increase accuracy. A favourite for both target and field archers.
Longbow / Barebow
Traditional styles that rely on instinct and technique rather than modern accessories – great for those who enjoy the heritage side of the sport.
Crossbow
A bow mounted on a stock that is drawn and held mechanically before firing a short bolt. Crossbows are used in some archery disciplines and special events, though not all clubs or competitions cater for them due to range and safety requirements.
